Wheels for March 11
by John Kanelis

AND THE WINNER OF THE SCIENCE BOWL IS ... Team A. Two teams, comprising incredibly bright young Amarillo high school students and four so-so Rotarians took part in a mock competition to show off the students' science and math knowledge. The questions came in rapid-fire fashion and the young people all took command of the answers. The Rotarians taking part were John Huffaker, Bart Boxwell (Team A) and Wes Knapp and John Kanelis (Team B). According to Debra Halliday, one of three Pantex employees involved with the Science Bowl, the competition occurs every year in five regional sites. Amarillo High School won this year's local competition and the winners take part in the national competition against equally bright young people from around the nation. Thanks so much for humbling us in the presence of our future leaders. They did us all proud.

FAMILY FUN NIGHT is coming up March 25, in lieu of our regular noon meeting. It will be at the Discovery Center, courtesy of Chip Lindsey, our March program chair. Come and take part that evening in some interactive entertainment and fun.

THANKS GO TO LANE BOYD AND BRENT MCCLURE for offering a heartfelt invocation and introducing a large roll call of guests and visiting Rotarians, respectively.

BE SURE TO ATTEND next week to listen to local falconer Jimmy Walker, who will speak to us about falcon hunting on the High Plains.

OUR READING INITIATIVE continued this week with book distributions at Glenwood and San Jacinto elementary schools. This is a worthwhile program designed to promote literacy in our community. We honor our guest speakers as well by asking them to sign books, which then are placed in school libraries around Amarillo. Julie Ontiveros reports the children were "thrilled" to get the books, and they couldn't believe they got to take them home. Thanks, Julie.

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED to put visiting Group Study Exchange visitors up for a few days in early April. They'll arrive in Amarillo on April 1 and will depart for Dumas on April 6. They need places to stay. Part of GSE's program is for host Rotarians to play host to the visitors. Anyone interested in taking part in this worthwhile exchange should contact Cal Harriman as soon as possible. He needs hosts for four members of the five-member team.

ROTARY INSERT COMING. The April edition of Amarillo Magazine will have our second 12-page section, Rotary Action. Look for it when it's distributed with the March 28 issue of the Amarillo Globe-News.

CLUBRUNNER DEBUT. This is the first edition of the Wheels published on our new ClubRunner Web site. Wish us luck as we learn to navigate our way through this new and exciting system. See y'all next week.
